Jade Sutherland - Kate Garven

Laura

Recommended Posts

Along with Dani, Jade was my favourite Sutherland so I thought I would make a thread for her. What are you opinions on her? Did you like her?

I liked Jade, a lot more than Kirsty. She wasnt given as many storylines as Dani or Kirsty but I liked the ones she was given. Her bulimia and finding out she wasnt Kirsty's twin. I think if the writers had of given her more storylines she could have been a really good character. I think her bulimia could have been looked at with a lot more depth. I saw the episodes where it started and up until Rhys and Shelly found out. I think a lot more could have come from it. When she first arrived, I don't think Kate Garven was a very good actress, but by the time she left in 2004, I think she had improved a lot.

I liked Jade but that’s as far as it goes. She defiantly wasn’t one of my all time favourites and I don’t think she was anywhere near as good a character as Kirsty or Dani but she was ok and was an essential part of the Sutherland clan. The problem as highlighted in the original post was that she simply didn’t get enough storylines. She was there as a support role to Dani and Kirsty. However this wasn’t Kate Garven’s fault. I don’t think she was a bad actress, just didn’t get the material. I did like her interaction at times with Kirsty and Dani especially when she always had to keep covering for Kirsty.

I thought that whole twin storyline with Laura was terrible to be honest. It was obvious it was a way to write Jade out of the show but they could have done a lot better than that. I remember way back in 2000 (I think) after the landslide when Jade was trapped Kirsty instinctively knew where she was because they shared a psychic bond owing to the fact that they were twins. Then all of that is completely disregarded and everything we’ve been made to believe for four years flushed completely down the toilet when the Degroots turn up and announce that Kirsty and Jade aren’t actually twins – A massive continuity error.

Then in a short period of time she goes completely of the rails, not consistent with the character in my opinion.

Also something which bugged me was why didn’t Jade come down for Kirsty’s recommitment ceremony? Shelly did.

After she popped into the hospital when Kirsty was diagnosed with Kidney disease (loved the scene with her and Shelly BTW) she apparently disappeared after that. It’s funny because she was supposed to be roommates with Kit who used to make visits to the bay on a regular basis and there was no mention of what happened to Jade.

As Kirsty’s now back in the bay I wouldn’t mind seeing Jade again, along with the rest of the Sutherlands it would have been interesting to see her reaction to this whole being on the run for three years situation.

I really liked Jade. I loved her and Nick together. I though that was one of the cutest relationships on the show lol. I agree that by the time Kate left, her acting had improved a lot and I would love to see her return for a bit. She was definatly my favourite Sutherland

I totally agree, of all ways you could write someone out. Would have been more believable if they killed her off or something, or anything that wouldn't have made the writers of the show look like they can't remember a character's background.

I am not trying to insult the writers in any way possible.. but it just seems that sometimes they forget what they've done with characters in the past.

Like you say, how can Kirsty have a genetic psychic bond with her twin sister.. if she's not her real sister, maybe H&A had changed the writers before the Degroot story line & didn't look back into the 2000 Landslide story, I don't know.

But again, Continuity error.

I also find it a tad weird that Jade was never mentioned, I heard Kate Garven lives in England now which may be why she never reappears in the show but you know.. a mention from Kit or anybody wouldn't hurt. Even a scene with Kirsty on the phone would be good enough.

That's one thing I never get about soaps in general, as soon as someone leaves it's like they never existed. Maybe it's just a secret rule?

I was never mad about Jade, but she certainly wasn't a bad character. I always liked her bond with Kirsty, even if she wasn't her real sister in the end, and the stories around her covering up for her were quite interesting, as in a sense they were asking the question 'Would you lie for someone you love even if it's going to cause pain for someone else you love?'

It's a shame she didn't get more storylines, though. Kate is a good actress, but she wasn't given the material to show her talents off to the extent that Christie and Tammin did. Jade was often left with the support role to Kirsty and Dani, as Slade said earlier in the thread, when she could have been a really interesting character on her own. I did enjoy her storyline with Seb, though, when she was helping him through his eating problem. I thought that was an interesting one, as Jade had been through a similar thing herself when she developed bulimia and to see her helping him was great to see.

As a couple I loved Jade and Nick, and I was fuming when those episodes of 'The Dorm' aired! There was something believable about their relationship and they were often quite cute with each other, which was sweet to watch, so I was quite upset when those two broke up.

For me, her exit was pretty bad. The initial finding out she was a Degroot was good but then it turned into a bit of a damp squib by the end of it all.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Take Henry, for example. After he left it was like Mattie didn't even have a twin brother. Granted, he wasn't the most exciting character on the show ever - far from it IMO - but a mention here or there would've been nice, wouldn't it?.

In regards to Jade’s ending, yes it wasn’t great but it was a lot better than some of the other Sutherlands. I thought Max’s was very anti-climactic, Shelly’s and Rhys’s were non existent and Dani’s wasn’t so much bad as it was sad. But as least that suited her character. It was only Kirsty I felt that had a good ending. It was perfect in fact.

This is somewhat true. For example how often does Rachel mention Brad (or even Tam for that matter)? Since Dan’s funeral last year has Belle ever gone down to the city to visit Amanda? And don’t even get me started with Kirsty. However I don’t think they are entirely consistent when they do this. Just recently Miles got a text message from Sally saying that Cassie had a baby girl who was HIV negative. I think Ric said he was going to the city to meet up with Drew one time (I think he actually lied because he was going to fight but that is beside the point). During Dom’s fixation with Belle, when he went for a job interview in the city, Irene knew he deliberately performed badly because Finn sent her a video tape. She mentioned this to him afterwards.

However I think there is a much wider problem. And that is for a small town I feel the characters aren’t integrated with each other sufficiently. Although they all know each other how many people actually have friends outside their jobs/relationships. Jack, Belle, Roman, Aden, Angelo, Charlie etc. We hardly ever see any of these people socialise. If you take Holy Oaks for example a lot more of the characters spend time with each other outside school/college/work. Perhaps the writers think that is not really required. Anyway, I digress….

It's a fair point, some people are still mentioned, but not often. No-one in Summer Bay ever seems to make their relatives funerals once they leave the soap. That to me's a bit unrealistic. But if that's how it's written so shall it be.

Hollyoaks is quite different anyway, as they have possibly a lot more areas and cast members to use for social activity & the Hollyoaks writers have made them sociable with eachother. Hollyoaks is also one soap I do find more believable because at least with them, a majority of the time you have relatives return for weddings/funerals.. or they at least get mentioned.

Although as you've stated, some people will be mentioned. I didn't realise Miles had heard from Sally about Cassie's baby  yay to a healthy baby.. I actually missed the episode when Cassie left, But I was sure she was pregnant.

Back to the point.. Jade, I think her exit did suck a bit. Her character deserved a bit more of an exit. I was annoyed about Nick and Jade breaking up too! I thought Nick & Jade were an amazing item. But oh well. Neither of them are in it anymore :(
