PART 1

“Hey, Ric, don’t you want some brekkie?”

Ric looks up when Brad talks happily and shakes his head.

“No thanks. I’m not really hungry.”

“Okay then.”

Sally frowns when Ric starts walking out.

“Ric, where are you going?”

“Oh, just… I want to take a walk on the beach.”

“Okay…”

Sally and Brad share a worried look when Ric walks out distractedly and Sally picks Pippa up from her chair.

“Do you think he’s all right?”

Brad shrugs.

“I have no idea. I guess we’ll have to wait for him to come to us.”

“Yeah… I’m just going to drop Pippa off, I’ll see you later.”

“Sure.”

They share a quick kiss before Sally runs off and Brad finishes breakfast all by himself.

Ric looks at the ocean with a slight frown between his brows, wondering whether she’ll be here again today. A smile lights up his face when he sees a horse in the distance, galloping on the beach.

It’s her… it’s the same girl…

Dressed in jeans, riding boots and a large brown top, her dark her flying behind her as the horse rides on.

She stops when she sees him, glaring at him angrily before taking off.

Ric jumps up.

“Wait! I just want to know who you are!”

The girl glares at him, stroking over the horse’s mane.

“Up the yard, you git!”

She rides off again and Ric stares after her, even more curious and enthralled by the cloud of mystery surrounding her.

He sighs deeply before slowly walking off, wondering whether he’ll ever find out who she is or where she comes from.

Her accent… it was not Australian. She’s definitely from another country…

“Now I really wonder what you’re doing here…”

Ric frowns again and turns around, walking off silently.

“Oi, Ric!”

“Hey, Mattie.”

Matilda looks at Ric agitatedly.

“Are you okay? You seem a little out of it.”

“I’m fine.”

“You sure?”

“Yes. I need to get home, talk to you later.”

“Sure.”

Matilda watches after him as he speeds off and picks up her phone, biting her lip nervously.

“Cass, it’s me. Can you come over? I need your help with something. No, it’s about Ric. Thanks, Cass. I’ll meet you in the diner.”

“Hey! Can I have a pancake please, I have a mouth on me!”

Leah looks at the dark-haired girl strangely before nodding.

“Sure, you can sit down…”

“Thanks!”

She walks off and sits down at one of the tables, eyeing everyone suspiciously.

She jumps when Leah appears next to her, placing a plate on the table.

“Oh… thanks.”

“Anytime… sorry, you’re not from around here, are you?”

“Not really. Me father and I came here a few weeks ago. We’re really from Ireland.”

“I see. Are you planning to stay?”

“I haven’t got a baldy! I guess we’ll see how things go.”

“Well, Summer Bay is a great place to live, I think you’ll see that soon. I’m Leah Baker by the way.”

“I’m Megan Evans.”

“Pleased to meet you.”

“Thanks. Same here. I’ll probably knock in here again…”

“Feel free to do that.”

Megan nods and turns her attention to the pancake when Leah walks off.

“I don’t get it… Why would Ric cheat on you?”

“There’s just no other explanation. He’s distant and… just weird.”

Cassie shakes her head.

“But he loves you so much. I honestly don’t think that’s it. It has to be something else bothering him.”

“But what? Please, Cass… could you just try and find out?”

Cassie frowns, looking at Matilda seriously.

“I don’t know, Mattie… I’ll do my best, but when Ric closes up…”

Matilda sighs.

“I wonder if I’ll ever find out.”

I researched Irish slang and accents before I created her and now I think with an Irish accent...

HAHA! (He talks like that too now, it's really something else!)

Brilliant though - I like Megan! And I want to know where you're going with this since you won't tell me...

PART 2

Megan rolls her eyes when she walks out of the diner to see Ric standing next to her horse.

“Awe would you just bite the back of my bollox?”

Ric frowns, looking at her curiously.

“Whatever that means, it’s not good right?”

Megan sighs and glares at him.

“Stop bothering me.”

Ric doesn’t move however – he keeps patting the horse calmingly.

“Beautiful horse. What’s his name?”

“Blaze. Will you leave me alone now?”

“What’s your name?”

“Megan.”

Ric holds out his hand.

“Hi Megan. I’m Ric Dalby.”

“I don’t really care who you are. Can I go now?”

Ric walks up to her, looking curious.

“I just want to know who you are.”

“Well you know now, so lay off.”

She moves past him swiftly and gets on her horse, riding off again. Ric sighs shaking his head, before walking into the diner.

“Ric!”

Ric looks up when he hears his name and smiles at Mattie.

“Hey! Fancy running into you here.”

He puts his arm around her waist and she looks at him suspiciously.

“Can we talk?”

“Sure…”

“Okay, let’s go to the beach.”

“Okay.”

They walk out to the beach, hand in hand. Cassie smiles and shakes her head.

“Kids these days.”

She stares after her two friends, hoping honestly that they will sort everything out…

“So… what’s going on, you’ve been acting weird…”

Matilda looks at Ric seriously and he smiles.

“I know. Well you see there is this…”

He looks over his shoulder when a whinnies behind them and they both jump up when they see Megan galloping towards them on Blaze.

“What the…”

She stops the horse when she sees them, her eyes drowning in tears.

“You’ve got to help, it’s me da, he’s been attacked! Please…”

Ric nods.

“Right. You coming Mattie?”

“I’ll go get help!”

Ric kisses her quickly before jumping on the horse, putting his arms around Megan’s waist.

“Mattie, call me when you get to someone then I’ll tell you where we are!”

They gallop away as soon as Matilda starts running.

“Sal, Brad, come quick!”

Sally and Brad pull away from each other, quickly tugging on their clothes and looking at each other guiltily.

Sally looks at Matilda, blushing.

“What happened?”

“There was a girl on the beach, she says her father was attacked. Ric is with her.”

Brad nods.

“We can take my car, you call Ric, find out where they are and how we get there.”

The three of them rush to the car, while Matilda starts dialing Ric’s number.

“Ric? It’s me. Yeah, we’re on our way. Sally and Brad. Where are you? What? Okay, how do we get there?”

She frowns and shakes her head.

“I think you should talk to Brad. Yeah, we’ll be quick. It’s the girl’s dad okay? What? Oh no… Yeah, okay…”

She hands the phone to Brad and looks at Sally darkly.

“Ric says the house is trashed.”

“And the girl’s father?”

“He’s dead…”

“Yeah, okay Brad. Left and then right. Right again, straight, turn off, left and then through the bush – straight. And right again. Okay. Thanks.”

Ric puts the phone down and looks at Megan concernedly.

“Hey. Are you okay?”

She looks up, her hands shaking.

“Yeah… We were prepared for this… in a way. But it’s still a shock, I mean… it’s so soon.”

Ric frowns.

“So… what were you expecting?”

Megan looks at him darkly.

“For them to find us. That is why we left Ireland, because we knew they were on to us. But me da said that this was the last place we were going to. He was tired of running.”

Ric sits down next to her, frowning.

“I don’t understand… why were you running? From who?”

“He never told me, that’s the thing. He said he didn’t want to put me in danger.”

“So you have no idea?”

“No. I don’t.”

She looks away, biting her lip, and Ric puts his arms around her shoulders.

“Well… we’ll figure something out, don’t worry. How old are you anyhow?”

“I’m sixteen.”

“Are you in school?”

“No. When I was in Ireland, I finished year ten, but me dad taught me at home here. I guess that will change…”

Ric nods.

“Wait for Sally and Brad to get here. They’ll know what to do.”

Those parts were really funny!
